At some point in our lives, we have experienced trauma, whether in childhood or adulthood. Some people suppress it and never speak about it, while others allow it to consume them, affecting their relationship with others.
On average, 50 percent of the population will experience at least one traumatic event, and 8 percent will experience post-traumatic stress disorder. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental disorder that an individual experiences after a traumatic event that causes fear, helplessness, and anxiety.
According to the American Psychological Association, “Women are at greater risk for negative consequences following traumatic events. Many often hesitate to seek mental health treatment. Survivors often wait years to receive help, while others never receive treatment”.
While the memory of a traumatic event may be frustrating, it is still possible to overcome it. Practice these several steps.
- Accept help
- Exercise daily
- Practice self-care
- Avoid drugs
- Practice Mindfulness
Accept help
If you are willing to get past the trauma you experience, you must be open to receiving assistance from other individuals. These individuals are your family members, friends, colleagues, or a particular support group. It’s important to realize that there are always people in your corner willing to help.
Exercise daily
Regular exercise is proven to improve the symptoms of trauma. It allows you to heal and supplies your body with chemicals like endorphins to enhance your mood. You don’t have to spend money on a gym membership. Try to do fun activities such as walking, riding a bike, swimming at the beach, or jogging in your community.
Practice self-care
When you find the time to take care of yourself, you can relieve stress. Find cost-effective ways of self-care by taking a warm bath, listening to soothing music, and spending time in nature.
Avoid alcohol
After experiencing trauma, you may feel tempted to resort to alcohol or other drugs that give you a “release”. However, please do not fall into this trap because the practice can become very addictive as it allows you to forget your problems temporarily. Understand that the negative feelings will come back after you have come from your “high.”
Stay in the moment
Another proven way to overcome trauma is to be attentive to every moment in the present by acknowledging your current thoughts and feelings. Also, take deep breaths, which will help you to feel relaxed.
Everyone is guaranteed to experience trauma in life. Nevertheless, the key is to take action to heal from the wounds of your past by seeking support from other people, exercising every day, taking care of yourself, avoiding alcohol, and practicing mindfulness.
